2. A strong wind warning has been issued for waters between Torres Strait and
Port Douglas for Sunday.
3. A strong wind warning has been issued for eastern Gulf waters for Sunday.
STATE FORECAST
for the rest of Saturday and Sunday
Cloudy with patchy rain areas over the southern interior, contracting into the
southeast and easing to light showers later this afternoon and evening. Isolated
light showers over the far northeastern tropics and through the central
interior, developing over the central coast and southern tropics on Sunday.
Morning fog patches and drizzle areas on Sunday over the east coast north of
Brisbane and through the southeastern and central interior. Moderate to fresh SE
to NE winds over the tropics. Warm with moderate to fresh NW winds over central
and southeastern districts ahead of a cooler SW wind change extending from the
west during the afternoon and evening. Moderate SW to SE winds over western
districts.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
Monday: A large high over the Great Australian Bight will extend a firm ridge
and SW to SE winds into Queensland. Strong SE winds continuing about the
tropical east coast north of Port Douglas and through the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Isolated light showers and morning drizzle areas over the central coast and
northeast tropics. Dry elsewhere. Cool over much of the state with some early
light frost about the Granite Belt.
Tuesday: The high will remain over the Great Australian Bight as a low deepens
over the Tasman Sea. The ridge will persist across southern Queensland and
continue pushing drier SW to SE winds over much of the state. Fine throughout
except for very isolated shower activity over the far northeast tropical coast.
Cool over much of the state with more extensive frost areas over the southeast,
southern and central interior. Fresh to strong winds about all coastal waters.
Wednesday: A deep trough moving over southeastern Australia will extend into
western Queensland though in a weakening mode, with only patchy light rain areas
expected to develop about far southwestern parts of the state in the evening.
Fine conditions elsewhere apart from isolated light showers over northern Cape
York Peninsula. The low over the Tasman Sea moves further east, easing winds
over southern and central Queensland waters. Strong SE'ly winds also ease over
the northern tropics as the high over the Great Australian Bight weakens.
Another cold morning over the southeast, southern and central interior with
widespread early frosts.
The outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday: The trough moves east over
Queensland on Thursday, extending a patchy light rain band east over the
southern interior with possible thunder about the border. Dry SW to SE winds
again extend over the state south of the tropics following the trough on Friday
and Saturday. Remaining mostly fine through the tropics with only isolated
showers about northern Cape York Peninsula. Widespread early frost areas
continue over the southeast and southern interior.
