Desi Chickpea Values Surge

PANAMA - May 10/24 - SNS -- Values in desi chickpea export markets surged during the past week because of India's decision to eliminate import duties until March 31 of 2025.

Australia will be the main beneficiary of the policy change. Available supplies for its 2023-24 marketing campaign are estimated at 769,000 metroc tons (MT), down 200,000 from the previous marketing year.

The decline refects the combined impact of falling residual stocks and the impact of lower average yields on the 2023 harvest, with production slipping 10,000 to 531,000 despite an 11,000 hectare increase in area to 409,000.
