Chickpeas Firm Despite U.S. Data

PANAMA - Aug 16/24 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained a firmer tone during the past week, helped by continued strength in Mexican origin product.

Markets were not surprised by seeded area data reported by the USDA's Farm Services Administration (FSA) during the week, which added support to the view land in all classes of chickpeas rose sharply this year.

The FSA data suggests plantings reached 529,900 acres, up from 372,400 last year. If the number is accurate and yields are at their recent five year averages, production could more than double from 214,189 to 472,700 metric tons (MT).
