PANAMA - Oct 4/24 - SNS -- North American dry edible bean markets breathed a sigh of relief during the week on news that the U.S. dock workers strike affecting U.S. east coast and gulf ports was suspended until January 15.
The strike would have affected beans and other pulses shipped in containers via those ports in the United States, including a risk some dock workers in Canadian ports may refuse to handle U.S. origin containers to demonstrate solidarity with workers in the United States.
Last week's agreement covered wages. Negotiations will now continue through January 15 in hopes of reaching a new agreement covering outstanding issues such as port automation.
