U.S. Cotton Yields Under Pressure

WASHINGTON - Oct 11/24 -SNS -- All cotton production is forecast at 14.2 million 480-pound bales, down 2% from the previous forecast but up 18% from 2023, according to the USDA.

Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 789 pounds per harvested acre, down 18 pounds from the previous forecast and down 110 pounds from 2023.

However, the USDA noted that Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm on September 26, near the Panhandle and Big Bend areas of Florida and tracked through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The extent of damage to the cotton crop after Hurricane Helene is not yet known as power outages, communication challenges, and road blockages prevented a full evaluation in many areas.

Upland cotton production is forecast at 13.7 million 480-pound bales, down 2% from the previous forecast but up 16% from 2023.

Pima cotton production is forecast at 516,000 bales, down 6% from the previous forecast but up 63% from 2023.

All cotton area harvested is forecast at 8.63 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but up 34% from 2023.

Ginnings totaled 1,145,600 running bales prior to October 1, up from 952,650 running bales ginned prior to the same date last year.
