PANAMA - Dec 6/24 - SNS -- Canadian processors and exporters were not surprised to see Statistics Canada reduce its lentil production estimate from its September forecast, though some were hoping for a steeper decline.
Output was pegged at 2.43 million metric tons (MT) from 4.21 million acres. In September, the federal agency thought output could reach 2.59 million MT. However, provincial yield estimates suggested output was in fact closer to the final, survey based estimate.
Given a 179,000 MT carry over from the 2023-24 marketing year and imports of 95,000 MT, Canada's available supply of all classes of lentils has jumped from 2.1 to 2.7 million MT.
